Elad Lapidot

Professor of Jewish Studies, Université de Lille

Resident at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften:
October 2025

Research topic at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften:
»The Crisis of Israel. Lamentation«

Project outline:
The extreme violence in Israel/Palestine over the last months brought about the destruction of Palestinians by Israel, but also an inner demise of Israel. Current accounts and reactions typically deal with geopolitical histories and offer territorial or administrative solutions. This project attempts to comprehend the ongoing catastrophe through a phenomenology of Israel. Inspired by the traditional form of lament, I look back at Israel before the current destruction, contemplating the violence that lied repressed in its beauty, in its dream peace. My gaze seeks to reveal an invisibility: the effacement of the Palestinian-Jewish conflict from Israeli consciousness. This Israel perished in the present violence. I return to it here searching not restoration, but a chance of reparation. (Elad Lapidot)
