Luiz Araujo

Associate Professor of Ethics and Political Philosophy , State University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)

Resident at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften:
October-November 2013

Research topic at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften:
»Political legitimacy, ethics of citizenship and the question of religion in the public sphere«

Project outline:
In continuity with previous studies on the topics of deliberative democracy, the politics of recognition, the concept of toleration, and the idea of public reason, the current research project addresses the question of religion in the public sphere, one of the most debated issues of political philosophy in the last two decades. The main focus of the investigation deals with the problems of the justification of coercive laws and policies and the duties of individuals as citizens and government officials. Based on the ideal typology that separates into two categories the answers to the question of whether and to what extent religion should play a role in democratic politics - the exclusive or separatist view versus the inclusive or integrationist view - the research aims to evaluate the revisionist arguments against the restrictive interpretation, with its classical delimitation of boundaries between the secular and the religious, as well as to examine the paradigm of secularization and its related notion of secularism. (Luiz Araujo)

Research partner:
Luiz Araujo follows the invitation of Rainer Forst (Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy at Frankfurt University). His stay is funded with research funds from the Gerda and Alfons Kassel Foundation.
