The Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: Events

About the lecture
rnWars involve so much killing and so much harm that one wonders how they could ever be justified. It is as if once wars start, all the moral barriers to killing that exist in normal life are removed. Nonetheless, almost all human beings and certainly all states hold that wars can be morally justified and that some wars are or have been morally justified. The standard way to understand this justification is in terms of self-defense. However, this kind of justification has faced serious criticism in the last decade by moral philosophers in the UK and in the US. The purpose of the evening is to discuss this new criticism and try to offer an alternative to the traditional justification for killing in war. rnrn
