»The Beijing Variable. Transatlantic Relations after Tianmen (1989–2001)«

Projektbeschreibung

The 1989 Tiananmen crackdown marked a turning point in Western perceptions of China. While the United States and its European allies initially responded with condemnation and sanctions, they soon diverged over how to deal with Beijing. This project examines why a common transatlantic China policy proved so difficult to sustain between 1989 and China’s entry into the World Trade Organization in 2001. Focusing on the United States, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, it explores how human rights, trade, domestic politics and strategic interests shaped different national responses. The project adopts an »intermestic« methodology, examining foreign policy as the product of interaction between international pressures and domestic political, institutional, economic and ideological forces. By tracing these debates, it shows how China’s growing economic importance exposed tensions between Western political values and the benefits of deeper engagement, while also revealing the limits of triumphalist interpretations of the end of the Cold War and of expectations that economic integration would lead to political liberalisation.

Wissenschaftliches Profil

Stefano Chessa Altieri hat 2025 in Globaler Geschichte und Governance an der Scuola Superiore Meridionale in Neapel und der Grande École Sciences Po in Paris promoviert. Seine Dissertation »›A Middle Way for the Middle Kingdom‹. America’s Struggles to Come to Terms with Post-Tiananmen China (Juni 1989–Juni 1994)« untersucht die US-Außenpolitik gegenüber China nach der Niederschlagung der Proteste auf dem Tiananmen-Platz und den Wandel der bilateralen Beziehungen am Ende des Kalten Krieges. Während seines Promotionsstudiums verbrachte er Forschungsaufenthalte an der Yale University, der Columbia University und der American University in Washington, D.C. Er hat an der Grande École Sciences Po und an der Universität Bologna unterrichtet. Im Zentrum seiner Forschung stehen die Außenbeziehungen der USA, die Beziehungen zwischen den USA und China, die transatlantischen Beziehungen sowie die internationale Geschichte während und nach dem Kalten Krieg.
