»Zionism Meets Political Philosophy, Part I: Just War Theory and the First Israeli-Arab War«Abstract
The first war between Arabs and Jews in 1948 was, according to the historiography on which we (viz., Danny Statman and I) rely, »a four sided war«, which contemporary just war theory almost never address. Theorists usually analyze armed conflicts between two group agents, assuming that one is an aggressor and the other a defender, or that both are aggressors. In this part of our project we discuss conflicts between two ethnonational groups, both of which include defenders (minimalists) and aggressors (maximalists). The normative questions that we address are two. (1.) Are minimalists entitled to join their maximalist co-nationals in fighting the maximalists on the other side, and if so, in which circumstances? (2.) If so, what should minimalists have aimed to achieve by resorting to force and coercion?
