»Planetary Boundaries between Facts and Norms«About the conference
Once the concept of planetary boundaries was developed in the late 2000s, it quickly found its way into climate policy and oriented both government action and protests by social movements worldwide. So although this concept has had an impressive career, on closer inspection it is unclear what the concept actually achieves on its own. The question of how to identify such planetary boundaries is often understood as nothing more than a natural scientific question. And the normative judgments and the various interests and values establishing planetary boundaries are not well understood, although we need to understand them for meaningful public debate and rational politics. The conference focuses on the question of whether, and how, a politically mediated, practically relevant and morally well-founded concept of planetary boundaries can be elaborated.
