»Military Robotics and the Changing Nature of Armed Conflict:rnEthics, Law, and Design for the Armies of the 21st Century«

rnThe field of military robotics has witnessed tremendous advances over the last couple of years. Remote-controlled robots, most notably drones, have extended the operational capabilities of armies. Further, there are proposals for autonomous robots, which, because they will be able to make certain decisions themselves, do not depend on an operator. The two day workshop will bring together a group of ethicists, historians, roboticists, military officers, and international lawyers in order to discuss and explore the implications of these developments for law, just war theory (conceived in theological and philosophical terms), the engineering professions, as well as those serving in the military. The workshop will
rn- be one of the first workshops devoted exclusively to the ethical and legal implications of military robotics held in Germany
rn- facilitate intellectual exchange between researchers in different disciplines
rn- assess to what extent the German perspective on military robotics differs from the perspective of policy makers in the Anglophone countries
rn- facilitate the establishment of a network of researchers working on military robotics and related issues
rn- raise public awareness of the main issues arising from military robotics.
