What cultural meanings and methods of relationship-building make this effort possible in the US? For many participants, white anti-racism is primarily a moral project that involves participants in arduous kinds of self-cultivation, sometimes pursued in special trainings in activist settings or workplaces. Others challenge systemic racism through collective action to reform institutions that perpetuate racialized social inequities. Both modes engage political and ethical action to widely varying degree and in different ways. Informed by moral anthropology and sociolinguistics as well as political and cultural sociology, the study will build out the notion of »moral projects« of anti-racism, examining their personal dimensions, public presence and power. Modalitäten und Konstellationen in jüdischen, christlichen und islamischen Kontexten« gefördert; 2023 vom Forschungsprojekt »Moralischer Untergrund. Verborgene Praktiken des Widerstands«, das am Institut für Soziologie der Goethe-Universität angesiedelt ist. 2024–25 werden seine Forschungen über weißen Antirassismus von der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung gefördert. Wissenschaftliches Profil von Paul Roger LichtermanPaul Lichterman ist Professor für Soziologie und Religion an der University of Southern California. In seiner Forschung untersucht er, wie zivilgesellschaftliche Akteure in einer sozial ungleichen und kulturell vielfältigen Gesellschaft öffentliche Belange definieren und kollektives Handeln organisieren. Die kultursoziologische Sektion der American Sociological Association (ASA) zeichnete seine Artikel in American Journal of Sociology und in Theory and Society aus. Sein Buch Elusive Togetherness gewann den »Distinguished Book Award« von der Society for the Scientific Study of Religion sowie den »Distinguished Scholarship Award« der Pacific Sociological Association.
