Juan Espíndola![]() Postdoctoral Fellow Aufenthalt am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: September 2011−August 2012Forschungsthema am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: »Peace-building and Paternalism«Projektbeschreibung: Peace-building missions usually raise a host of moral and political concerns. The principles and practices commonly deployed in peace-building operations involve trade-offs between competing moral and political values. In my post-doctoral research I wish to explore one such trade-off—the dilemma between international humanitarian endeavors and paternalism. To what extent is humanitarian assistance premised on a paternalistic policy towards the host countries? If certain conditions warrant paternalistic assistance, and therefore paternalism should not be ruled out ex ante, what are these conditions? What kinds of reasons can be offered in order to justify paternalist intervention? Are they consequentialist or contractualist in shape? If the premises behind the justification for assistance are not paternalistic, to what extent may the implementation of concrete assistance measures turn out to be paternalistic?
