Jensen Memorial Lecture engages the intersections of anthropology and history. I understand it as an interdisciplinary relationship with its own distinguished history evidenced by the illustrious genealogy of articles on the topic that have emerged since Evans-Pritchard’s signal Marrett Lecture delivered in 1950. Drawing on my experience in applying anthropological methods to Afro-Atlantic historical ethnography, I explore how rituals can be used as archives to unlock repressed historical memories and the pasts they reenact. Wissenschaftliches Profil von Andrew ApterAndrew Apter ist Professor für Geschichte und Anthropologie an der University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), wo er das Atlantic History Colloquium mitbegründete und das African Studies Center leitete. Zuvor lehrte er an der Columbia University (1987–1989) und der University of Chicago (1989–2003). Als Gastwissenschaftler forschte er u.a. an der University of Lagos; der École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales; dem St. Antony's College, der Oxford University und der University of Utrecht. 2021 war er Heinz Heinen Senior Fellow am Bonner Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies. Apter hat Feldforschung und Archivstudien durchgeführt in Nigeria, Ghana, Kuba, der Dominikanischen Republik und bei kongolesischen Flüchtlingen in Sambia.In seinen Büchern befasst er sich vorrangig mit Westafrika und dem Schwarzen Atlantik. Gegenwärtig arbeitet er an dem Buch Atlantic Slavery and the Spirits of Capitalism, in dem er untersucht, wie die Sklaverei im Atlantik und die fetischen Formen menschlicher Kommodifizierung tief im Kern des rassistischen Kapitalismus verankert bleiben.
