Jesse Anne Tomalty![]() Postdoctoral Fellow Aufenthalt am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: September 2011 – August 2012Forschungsthema am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: »Remedial Responsibility and Global Justice«Projektbeschreibung: My project focuses on some of the normative questions arising from the fact of global poverty. Millions of people worldwide lack even the most basic material means to avoid starvation, dehydration, and preventable illness. Meanwhile, many others enjoy considerable affluence. The great disparity in wealth between the global rich and the global poor raises a number of important normative questions that I intend to address in my research. These include the following: Who bears responsibility for alleviating the plight of the global poor? Who is required to act in order to assist those suffering from severe material deprivations? Who is ultimately required to shoulder the burden? What is the nature of obligations to assist the global poor or to work towards the eradication of global poverty? Are they obligations of beneficence or of justice? Is there a right to assistance? I aim to contribute to the literature addressing these and related questions, focusing in particular on developing an account of remedial responsibility building on the work of David Miller.
