Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften mourns Jürgen Habermas
The influential philosopher and sociologist Jürgen Habermas passed away on March 14 at the age of 96.

The Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften, the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humaities at Goethe University, mourns Jürgen Habermas, who passed away on March 14, 2026, in Starnberg. Engaging with his thought was of central importance to many of our international fellows. We warmly remember the events at which he was a guest at the Foprschungskolleg. Notably, in July 2016, at the invitation of the Institute’s Director Matthias Lutz-Bachmann, a seminar was held with Habermas and his younger friends and colleagues to discuss the manuscript of his last major work, Also a History of Philosophy (Auch eine Geschichte der Philosophie, Suhrkamp 2019).
