»Contests of Interpretation in Struggles for Justice«

Projektbeschreibung

Mark Gorthey’s project studies the role of interpretive practices in contemporary social and political conflicts. It asks how the words and frameworks we adopt to make sense of such issues shape our understanding of the relevant problem(s), and what could count as appropriate solutions. The project takes a particular interest in practices within right-wing social and political movements to re-interpret demands for justice into other registers. In analyzing such practices, the project aims to help understand why these practices can be effective in disempowering struggles for justice, and what is needed to contest them.

Wissenschaftliches Profil

Mark Gorthey hat 2026 im Fach Philosophie an der Northwestern University (Illinois) promoviert. Er beschäftigt sich vor allem mit Fragen der Moralphilosophie und der politischen Philosophie. Dabei bezieht er sich auf  Ansätze der Kritischen Theorie und der Hermeneutik.

Mark Gorthey ist auf Einladung von Professor Rainer Forst und des von der Alfons und Gertrud Kassel Stiftung geförderten Justitia Center for Advanced Studies Postdoctoral Fellow am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften.
