»Hope and Despair: A Theory of Language«

Projektbeschreibung

My research project focuses on hope’s linguistic devices, which lay out a case for an ethical theory of normativity. The political dimensions of hope have braced failures and victories during the past centuries, not less during the last few decades. The conditions for discussing hope rest upon the contemporary and historical frame but find their roots between coexisting and Post-Kantian criticism of our moral judgment. Expressly, I focus on the complex relation between language and knowledge that appears as the central motif in the thought of Johann Georg Hamann (1730–1788) and Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855). Questioning communication’s possibilities and limits, Hamann and Kierkegaard explore language in the context of a true-to-life philosophy. The focus on an existential epistemology, i.e., the question of how to understand life emerges from the ways in which a person understands herself. This approach to philosophy has significant linguistic implications for the conception of honesty, inner and outer spheres, private and public spaces, and the relation between selfhood and otherness.

Wissenschaftliches Profil

Maria Deiviane Agostinho hat 2014 ihr Studium mit dem Master im Fach Philosophie an der Universidade Federal do Ceará (Brasilien) abgeschlossen. Für ihre Promotion ging sie nach Dänemark, wo sie am Søren Kierkegaard Forskningscenteret tätig war. Ihre Promotion setzt sie nun an der Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt am Main fort.
