»Self-Help Human Security and Social Movements under rises in The Atlantic World«

What becomes of democracy when the institutions meant to sustain it cease to function? My research examines how communities organize security, cooperation, and political authority under conditions of economic collapse, violence, and institutional decay. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Venezuela, I am completing a book that investigates how social movements generate forms of governance, collective security, and political legitimacy amid economic collapse and institutional decay. Rather than treating democratic life as synonymous with the state, the project explores how democratic practice is enacted through everyday practices beyond formal institutions, contributing to broader debates on democracy, legitimacy, and security. During the fellowship, I intend to begin a new project focusing on community-based self-defence movements across the Atlantic World, examining how marginalized communities organize protection through collective action in response to authoritarianism and state retreat.

Wissenschaftliches Profil

Alexander Stoan hat Politikwissenschaft am Glendon College der York University (B.A.) und an der McMaster University (M.A.) studiert. 2025 promovierte er an der York University mit einer Arbeit über »Crisis & Decay: Social Movement Organizations, (In)security, and the State in Venezuela«. In seiner Forschung beschäftigt er sich mit Fragen der Demokratie, sozialen Bewegungen, politischer Ethnografie sowie kritischen Ansätzen in den Internationalen Beziehungen und der Vergleichenden Politikwissenschaft. Gegenwärtig stellt er sein Buch über soziale Bewegungen und Alltagssicherheit in Venezuela fertig. Gleichzeitig entwickelt er ein vergleichendes Forschungsprogramm über gemeindebasierte Selbstverteidigung und demokratische Praxis in der atlantischen Welt.
